It wasn’t until we got lost in the hardware details of The Modern Moccasin that we realised jewellery might be ESSEN’s next progression. In keeping with our philosophy of doing more with less, we set about our journey. That was 18 months ago - a testament to our design process and the time it takes to perfect the smallest of details in a supply chain that’s sustainable, ethical and responsible. The result is a carefully curated collection that limits the constant need for newness with versatile pieces of exceptional quality.

Following ESSEN’s commitment to responsible practices, our jewellery is handcrafted by skilled artisans from 100% recycled precious metals – reducing the use of raw materials in the process. Comprising of four handcrafted designs: The Disc, The Drop, The Huggie and The Hoop, each piece is available in locally sourced, 100% recycled 925 sterling silver and 18-carat gold vermeil. 

What is gold vermeil?

Pronounced vehr-may, gold vermeil is the highest quality variety of gold-plated jewellery. It’s important to make the distinction, as regular, flash-plated gold uses cheap base materials like brass and copper. In contrast, gold vermeil must exclusively use a 925 sterling silver base, the highest quality silver available. Gold vermeil is also legally required to be at least 2.5 microns thick and 10 karats; this ensures the longevity of the gold, making it unlikely to ever rub off.
